An escape room is a team game where you explore a themed setting, find clues and solve puzzles to complete a mission within a time limit. You might investigate a mystery, crack a vault or repair a spaceship. A host gives you a briefing before you begin and explains how to request hints. You do not need previous escape-room experience to try a beginner-friendly game.

Do not assume the story’s locked door means you cannot leave. Exit arrangements vary, so ask the host how to leave or take a break before the game starts. If enclosed spaces worry you, contact the venue about room size, exits and whether a member of your team can step out and return.

Some escape rooms are designed to frighten players, while others focus on adventure, detective work or family puzzles. Check the room’s theme and content warnings for darkness, loud sounds, jump scares or live actors. Difficulty is a separate measure: a challenging puzzle room does not have to be scary. Ask the venue if the description does not answer your concerns.

Many escape-room games run for around 60 minutes, but the exact playing time varies by room. Allow extra time for arrival, the briefing and anything the venue offers afterwards. Check your booking instructions for when to arrive, and leave travel time between rooms if you are planning more than one game.

If the timer runs out before your team completes the mission, your attempt ends without a successful escape. The host will explain what happens next; some venues offer a debrief or explain remaining puzzles. It is still a shared experience, and you can ask for hints during play rather than waiting until the final minute.

You do not need specialist knowledge to try a beginner-friendly escape room. Start by observing carefully, sharing ideas and following the room’s clues. Different teammates notice different things, so teamwork matters more than one person solving everything. Choose a room suited to your experience and ask the host for a hint if your team gets stuck.

Two people can play rooms that allow a team of two, but each room has its own minimum and maximum group size. Check the listing before choosing a slot. A larger group may divide the puzzles more easily, while a smaller team may prefer a beginner-friendly room. Also check whether the booking is private or shared with other players.

Children can play rooms that permit their age group, but there is no single minimum age for every escape room. Check the room’s minimum age, adult-supervision requirements and theme. Use our youngest-player filter to narrow the preview, then read the individual rules. A low difficulty rating does not override an age restriction.

Accessibility varies by room, even within the same venue. Ask about step-free access, door widths, seating, reaching puzzles, lighting, sound and any crawling or climbing. Explain what your team needs so the operator can confirm whether that particular game is suitable. Do not assume that a venue’s general accessibility description covers every room.

Escape-room prices vary by venue, room, team size and session. Some operators charge per person and others quote a group price. Compare the full total for the same number of players and time, and check what is included. Prices on this Coming Soon site are fictional examples; live prices will need to be confirmed before you book.

Search methodically and tell your team what you find. Look at accessible props from different angles and, where the briefing allows, check underneath stools or tables. Notice repeated symbols, patterns, colours and numbers. Try obvious puzzle buttons or switches gently, but leave emergency controls, electrical fittings and anything marked off-limits alone. If something needs force, stop and ask your host.

Some games use special lighting or fluorescent markings. If your venue supplies a UV torch, it may reveal clues on permitted puzzle surfaces. Other games use sound, reflections or objects that fit together. Follow the clues and briefing: not every room uses these ideas, and you should not dismantle lights or bring your own tools.

Bring curiosity, comfortable clothing and any glasses you need to read small clues. The venue normally supplies the puzzle equipment; check its instructions before arriving. Share discoveries out loud, divide the search, keep used clues together and swap puzzles when you get stuck. Ask for a hint when the team stops making progress — it is part of the fun. Keep phones away unless the host says they are part of the game.

Ask your host at the briefing how the hint system works. It may use a screen, speaker or another signal, and the rules differ between games. When your team has stopped making progress, a hint can help everyone enjoy the next part of the story. Ask whether hints affect the venue’s result or leaderboard rules if you want to compare escape times.
